What is the Mendel festival

The Mendel festival is a multi-genre week of science, music, and entertainment that commemorates the legacy of Gregor Johann Mendel, the discoverer of the basic principles of inheritance. It combines cutting-edge science in an accessible form, a family atmosphere, and musical experiences for all generations.

Who is the festival for

The festival is for families with children, students, lovers of science, music, and all curious visitors who want to experience Brno a little differently. The program is designed so that both complete newcomers and those who are deeply interested in science can find something for themselves.

What happens at the festival

Throughout the week, you can look forward to popular-science lectures, science shows, workshops, guided tours, and accompanying programs for children. The main festival day brings open-air concerts, family programs, discussions, a gastro zone, and other events in the atmosphere of a summer city festival. 

When and where does it take place?

From July 12 to 19, Brno will come alive with a colorful program, culminating in the main festival day on July 18 at the University Campus Bohunice.
You can expect a day full of music, science, interactive experiences, and family fun. Free entry.

The Mendel festival connects the world of science, music, and family entertainment at the University Campus of Masaryk University in Brno. Visitors can expect a music program, popular-science lectures, and discussions with scientists, science shows for children, interactive stations, creative workshops, and tours of CEITEC, SIMU LF MU, and the Anatomical Museum LF MU.

The Mendel festival 2026 takes place from July 12 to 19, 2026.
The main festival day will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, from 10:00 to 23:45.

Yes, the festival is intended for all generations and includes a family program.
On Saturday, July 18, the family program will run from 10:00 to 18:00 and will also include a science show for children with interactive experiments.

Public transport is recommended, for example, tram no. 8 from the main train station towards Bohunice Hospital or the University Campus, or bus lines to the same area.
Connections from the center of Brno take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
The capacity of parking lots in the vicinity is limited, and Studentská street will be impassable.
Parking is only allowed in designated areas.

The main festival day is free, tours of specialized workplaces are possible based on prior reservation. The reservation link will be published in the Program section about a month before the event.

The rules for visiting and participation conditions can be found in the visitor regulations on the festival’s website.
Visitors are also required to comply with the festival regulations, and bringing your own refreshments, umbrellas, drugs, or weapons to the festival is not allowed.
