Lake Malawi
Lake Malawi is a indie-pop band singing in English, founded in 2013 by Albert Černý with Jeroným Šubrt (after the breakup of the band Charlie Straight). With the song “Friend of a Friend” they represented the Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, where they finished in eleventh place in the final.
On their latest album “The Great Video Game Crush” (October 2022), they collaborated among others with saxophonist The 1975 John Waugh. John met Lake Malawi at their club concert in Newcastle, England, then unexpectedly appeared in the audience at Lake Malawi’s concert at Rock for People and in 2024 performed with the band in Prague at the Metronome festival – the concert was recorded by Czech Television (watch on iVysílání).
Lake Malawi has been on the scene for over ten years and has played more than 400 concerts in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Austria, Israel, the Netherlands, Spain, Great Britain, and other countries. They have supported Thirty Seconds to Mars, The Kooks or singer Mika. They have performed at major festivals such as Colours of Ostrava, Rock for People, The Great Escape, or Waves Vienna.
The single “High-Speed Kissing” (feat. We Are Domi) from the latest album was among the most played songs in Czech airwaves for several weeks. You can regularly hear Lake Malawi’s music on radio stations like Evropa 2, ČRo, Fajn rádio, or Expres FM, and it can also be heard in Czech films or as the jingle for Leo Express trains (Chinese Trees).
Currently, Lake Malawi performs with guitarist Matěj Morávek, drummer Vít Skalička, and Jan Uvira on keyboards. Albert Černý (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Jeroným Šubrt (bass guitar) are the authors of most songs and also participate in the creation partially as producers.
